Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 rankings on Monday, August 12, 2024. In the medical category, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi has retained the top spot for best medical colleges in India. PGI Chandigarh and Vellore's Christian Medical College secured ranks 2 and 3. The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences in Bengaluru and Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research in Puducherry secured the fourth and fifth rank respectively.

Notably, Uttar Pradesh was represented by Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences in sixth place and Banaras Hindu University in seventh. Tamil Nadu also had a strong presence, with Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in eighth, Kasturba Medical College in ninth, and Madras Medical College and Government General Hospital in Chennai rounding out the top ten.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework ranks institutions through a detailed evaluation process. The criteria used for ranking include teaching quality, research, graduation outcomes, outreach, inclusion, and public perception. Each of these areas is given a different weight based on its importance. Teaching, learning, and research each carry a 30% weight. Graduation outcomes contribute 20%, while outreach, inclusion, and perception each make up 10% of the ranking.
