NEET UG Result 2024: The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the NTA to revise its merit list by considering the answer suggested by a panel of three experts from IIT Delhi as the correct one for a controversial Physics question. Previously, the NTA had awarded four marks to students who chose either of two answers. Now, only students whose answers match the IIT Delhi suggestion will be awarded four marks. It may be noted that 4,20,774 candidates attempted option 2 (old NCERT edition answer) and 9,28,379 candidates attempted option 4. Those who selected the second option will lose five marks.


On the controversial Physics question that was asked in the examination, the bench accepted the report of the experts of IIT Delhi that there was only one correct answer and not two, as alleged by some lawyers.


NEET UG 2024: Controversial Physics Question


The controversial physics question in the NEET UG examination is given below:


Question: Given below are two statements: 



  • Statement I: Atoms are electrically neutral as they contain an equal number of positive and negative charges. 

  • Statement II: Atoms of each element are stable and emit their characteristic spectrum.


In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:



  1. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.

  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct. 

  3. Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect.

  4. Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.


A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud dismissed the pleas seeking cancellation and re-test of the NEET UG examination 2024, stating there was no proof of a major problem with the exam. 


As per the NEET UG results declared on June 4, 2024, a total of 67 students secured the top rank. The number of toppers later dropped to 61 as the NTA removed the compensatory marks awarded to students for loss of time. The NTA also conducted a re-examination for 1,563 students who received grace marks, however, only 813 students appeared for the re-examination.

Now that the apex court has ordered the National Testing Agency to revise the NEET UG results based on the correct option suggested by IIT Delhi, the number of NEET toppers is expected to drop from 61 to 17.
