The NEET quota bill gives a 7.5 percent horizontal reservation in the undergraduate courses of medicine, dentistry, Indian medicine and homeopathy for government school students who have cleared NEET. But this will not be applicable for seats reserved for the all-India quota.

Previously, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami had said that more than 300 medical seats will go to students coming from poor economic backgrounds because of this sub-quota.

"Those who studied from the sixth standard to higher secondary schools in Corporation schools, municipal schools, Adi Dravidar and tribal welfare schools, Kalla reclamation schools, forest department schools and other schools managed by the state government departments will benefit from this reservation," the CM informed.

A commission headed by retired judge P Kalaiyarasan had recommended that 10 percent of seats can be reserved for the students of state government schools. However, after seeing different aspects related to the matter, the Tamil Nadu Cabinet has approved a 7.5 percent reservation.

The bill is currently awaiting Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit's approval who has stated that he needs three to four weeks' time to look over it from all necessary angles. He had said this in response to a letter by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) President MK Stalin urging him to give his assent to the bill passed in the state assembly.

Earlier, DMK MP and party Treasurer TR Baalu had urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to direct the state governor for giving required approval for the bill.
