Imphal: Incessant rainfall has led to flooding in several areas of Manipur's Imphal West and Imphal East districts after two major rivers breached their barriers, officials said.  In response to the flood situation, the state government declared a holiday for all government offices on Wednesday, and schools will remain closed until Thursday.

An official statement issued by the state Education Department said, “In view of the rising river level and subsequent flooding of many areas and inconveniences caused to many households and installations across the state due to incessant rain and in anticipation of the flood-like condition continuing for some more days to come, and keeping in mind the safety of the students and teachers of the state, all schools of the state, Government, Government Aided, Private and Central Schools will remain closed on the 3rd and 4th of July, 2024”.

A senior official told PTI that the Imphal River breached its embankment at Singjamei Oinam Thingel in Imphal West, while the Kongba River breached at Kongba Irong and parts of Keirao in Imphal East. Additionally, the Iril River overflowed at Sawombung and parts of Kshetrigao in Imphal East.

"Huge volumes of river water entered residential localities… Over a 3-km stretch of the India-Myanmar road has also been flooded and more than 1,000 people were affected,” he said.

Relief and rescue operations are underway for the affected people, he added.

Meanwhile, the body of a 25-year-old man, who fell into the Senapati River on Tuesday afternoon, was retrieved by a team from the Indian Red Cross Society with assistance from locals, officials said.

Several parts of the northeastern state have experienced heavy rainfall in the last few days.
