New Delhi: In what will come as a relief to students amid rising cases of COVID 19 in Maharashtra, the state government on Friday decided to cancel the final year examinations for non-professional courses in all state universities. For nonprofessional courses, the government has said that the results of the previous examinations will be used for arriving at the final results for awarding degrees.

The  Minister of Tourism and Environment Government of Maharashtra, Aditya Thackeray also announced the government’s decision in a tweet and wrote ‘Non Professional courses: option to pass on aggregate or to appear for exams whenever possible 2) Professional courses: CM Uddhav ji has requested PM for guidance on nat councils’.

He also said that no university can force a student to take an exam for non-professional courses and that a separate meeting will be held to decide on ‘Backlog and ATKT students’.

A report by IANS said Higher & Technical Education Minister Uday Samant informed as many as 734,516 were due to appear for examinations in various non-professional courses (like BA, BCom, BSc., etc) and another 283,937 for professional courses (like BE, LlB, BCA, etc) for the AY-2019-2020 final year examinations scheduled by 14 government universities.

The report also said that the decision was taken after the recommendations of a state-level committee which was appointed as per the UGC guidelines. After the committee submitted its report last month, meetings were held to decide on the exams.

Maharashtra is still leading as the worst affected state with a total of 1,24,331 cases out of which 5,56,65 are active cases. There has been a total of 5,893 fatalities.
