The Lucknow district administration has further announced closure of all schools in the district for up to class 8 till January 10, 2024. Besides closure of schools for classes up to 8, the district administration has also introduced restricted operational timings for classes 9 to 12. As per the announcement, all schools in Lucknow have been asked to remain open for classes 9 to 12 from 10:00 am to 03:00 pm. Notably, as per the previous schedule, Lucknow schools were to open from January 8, Monday. However, with the prevailing weather conditions sweeping cold breeze across various parts of North India, the district administration has decided to extend the school closures. 


Suryapal Gangwar, district magistrate, stated that it is the school management’s responsibility to make adequate arrangements to protect students from the cold in classrooms, as per a Times of India report. The district magistrate further suggested schools to use room heaters in classrooms to protect students, and they shouldn’t be allowed to sit outside or in the open during classes, practicals or exams.

Notably, in the wake of the intense cold and fog amid dripping temperature levels, respective administrations in various parts of North India have been taking appropriate measures to protect school-going children from the cold wave. Earlier today, Delhi Education Minister announced closure of schools in Delhi till class 5 from January 8 to 12. Later in the evening, Delhi mayor further announced the closure of MCD schools from January 8 to 12. 


The announcement for Delhi schools was quickly followed by Punjab CM Bhagwant Bhagwant Mann who announced another winter break for schools in Punjab. As per Mann, Punjab schools shall observe another winter vacation from January 8 to 14 for classes up to 10. The Punjab CM made the announcement through an official post of X (formerly Twitter). Similarly, the Gautam Buddha Nagar District Basic Education Officer Rahul Panwar issued an order announcing holidays for students up to Class 8 in all schools in Noida and Greater Noida until January 14.
