Karnataka Govt To Scrap NEP, Bring Its Own Education Policy Next Year, Says Dy CM Shivakumar

The Karnataka government has decided to scrap the NEP (National Education Policy) 2020. The state government will bring its own 'Karnataka Education Policy Next Year. The information was shared by Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar. Talking to the media today, Dy CM Shivakumar said that "We have examined various aspects of the National Education Policy that was adopted by the BJP and we have decided to scrap it. We will bring new Karnataka Education Policy next year," PTI reported Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar as saying. 

“Karnataka has a big strength on Education Policies, we have a big human resource power, and this is the knowledge capital. We have the highest number of international and primary schools, engineering, medical, and nursing colleges. We have our own system of quality education with students from all over the country” he further added. 

Speaking on the issue, Karnataka Higher Education Minister MC Sudhakar underlined the lack of infrastructure for the implementation in the state. "Infrastructure is not there. Not a single rupee was allocated when they introduced NEP in 2021. Even faculty issues are there. So, the state government has decided to bring in a new education policy from next year," PTI reported Sudhakar as saying. 

Notably, the newly formed Congress government in Karnataka had been muling to scrap the National Education Policy. Earlier last week, Karnataka CM Siddharamaiah announced the scrapping of the NEP 2020 in the state from the next academic year. He said that by scrapping the NEP 2020 introduced by the BJP, the Karnataka government aims at providing education to students of the state in line with the constitution. 

"NEP was implemented in Karnataka, when it was not introduced in any other BJP-ruled states...I want to tell one thing, this year there was a bit of delay, from the next year onwards we will change the NEP and try to provide education in accordance with the Constitution, because BJP is anti-constitution and they believe in Manuwad," Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah was quoted as saying by PTI. 

The Karnataka government’s decision received strong criticism and attack from the BJP. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that ‘education should not be a political pawn.’ "Disappointed to learn about Karnataka CM's politically-motivated decision to discontinue the National Education Policy 2020. Our education system needs evolution, not regression. NEP was a result of years of consultations, reflecting the aspirations of all. This decision reveals the anti-reform, anti-Bharatiya Bhasha and anti-Karnataka character of the Congress, Dharmendra Pradhan was reported as saying.
