The Karnataka Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has approved three major resolutions during their Monday night meeting. These include opposition to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), resistance to the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal, and a stance against the delimitation of constituencies for both the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
Once the NEET Bill is passed, Karnataka is expected to implement its own medical entrance examination, moving away from the national NEET framework. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has voiced his disapproval of NEET asserting that it unfairly benefits students from North India and disadvantages local Karnataka students. He emphasised the need for states to conduct their own entrance exams, according to a report The Hindustan Times.
Further, Shivakumar asserted that they will unitedly fight against it.
The decision of Karnataka government comes after Tamil Nadu's move to pass resolution in June 2024 to abolish NEET and conduct state-based medical admissions with Class 12 marks.
Karnataka Likely To Pass Resolutions Today
The Karnataka Cabinet plans to present these resolutions in the State Legislature on Tuesday, sources told IANS. The move is anticipated to spark significant debate and controversy. Additionally, the Cabinet has approved the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill 2024. This bill aims to decentralise power within the Greater Bengaluru Authority and includes city corporations. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will serve as the President of the Greater Bengaluru Authority, as per a report on IANS.
The Cabinet also discussed at length the controversial private sector quota for local Kannadigas, a topic that remains contentious within the state.
