A team of six students from India has achieved the country's best performance ever at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2024. The Indian team ranked fourth globally, winning four gold medals, one silver medal, and one 'honourable mention' at the 65th IMO held in Bath, United Kingdom. This is India's best result since it first participated in 1989, both in terms of the number of gold medals and the rank achieved.

The Indian team was led by Krishnan Sivasubramanian as the leader and Rijul Saini as the deputy leader. The previous best rank for India was seventh, achieved in 1998 and 2001. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian team in a post on X. This feat, he added, "will inspire several other youngsters and help make mathematics even more popular".

Globally, US, China, and South Korea secured the top three positions. India scored 167, just one mark behind South Korea. The winning team from the US scored 192 points. A total of 609 students (528 boys and 81 girls) from 108 countries took part in the IMO 2024.
