The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has introduced a new exit option to its B.Tech students after the end of third year. IIT Bombay B.Tech students who take the exit route after their third year will be awarded a B.Sc in Engineering degree from IIT Bombay. The new exit option from IIT Bombay follows the lines of the NEP (National Education Policy) 2020.

Notably, in its NEP 2020 guidelines, the NEP 2020 recommended higher educational institutions across the country offering 4-year undergraduate honours programs to allow students an exit option after the completion of third year of their course, graduating them with a graduate degree in a major subject, or allow them to complete the 4-year program, awarding them with an hours graduate degree.

The NEP 2020 regulations also recommend educational institutions offering 4-year degree programs to offer students a subsequent exit option after every year, with degrees awarded accordingly, as per their exit duration, like certificate, diploma, degree, etc. While some state universities in certain parts of the country have introduced the exit option after the entry level itself, the IIT Bombay has unlocked the option for third year students only. Interestingly though, those candidates who exit from IIT Bombay after the third year of their program shall also be allowed to participate in campus placements, as per reports.

The new exit option from IIT Bombay is likely to be favourable for students struggling to clear their exams, complete their course or are eyeing something else. As per media reports, as many as 15 students at the IIT Bombay have already opted for the exit option. As pear a TOI report, students who fulfill 60 per cent of the total credit requirement will now be awarded a B.Sc Engineering degree by IIT Bombay, after three years.
