Even today, many children in India are either deprived of education or drop out of school before completion of studies due to financial constraints. According to a government report, the dropout rate at the secondary school level in India is more than 17%, while the dropout rate at upper-primary (VI to VIII) and primary level is 1.8% and 1.5% respectively.


Dropout rate among boys is very high at secondary level


The dropout rate among boys is quite high at the secondary level, as compared to the primary level. It is worth noting that according to the latest Unified District Information System for Education Plus or UDISE+ 2019-20 report, about 30 percent of students do not make the transition from secondary to senior secondary level.


Highest dropout rate at the secondary level


It has been revealed from the report that there are 19 states/union territories where the dropout rate at the secondary level (Class IX and X) is much higher than the All India rate (17.3%). The dropout rate is more than 25% in Tripura, Sikkim, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. In fact, four states have registered a dropout rate of more than 30%.


Dropout rate more than 20% even in urbanized Delhi


It is noteworthy that while the dropout rate is very high in most of the states in the North-East and Eastern regions, the dropout rate in urbanized Delhi is more than 20%. Along with Punjab (lowest dropout rate of 1.5%), states/UTs with dropout rates less than 10% are Chandigarh (9.5%), Kerala (8%), Manipur (9.6%), Tamil Nadu (9.6%), and Uttarakhand (9.8%) are.


Dropout rate of girls is less than boys


Comparatively, Punjab, Manipur, and Kerala have the highest promotion rate of more than 90% at the secondary level. The overall dropout rate of girls is 2% less than that of boys. Punjab has recorded zero dropout rate for girls while Assam has recorded the highest dropout rate (35.2) at the secondary level.
