Depressed Over Backlogs, IIT Student Kills Self In Vizag

Upset over backlogs, a 20-year-old IIT Hyderabad student has allegedly committed suicide in Vizag by jumping into the sea.

In yet another incident of IIT student suicide, a 20-year-old IIT Hyderabad student has allegedly committed suicide in Vizag, by jumping into the sea there. As per the police, the student was upset over his academic backlogs. Dhanavath Karthik, an IIT Hyderabad student went missing from the institute’s Sangareddy campus on July 17. The police suspect him to be drowned in the sea on July 19. His body was found on July 20, by the help of a fisherman, the police said.  

"He could not concentrate on studies and came back," Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner C.M. Trivikram Varma was quoted as saying after the incident by news agency PTI. Further investigation into the matter revealed that the student’s mobile number was last located at the Ramakrishna Beach (RK Beach) in Visakhapatnam on July 19. In CCTV footage, he could also be seen walking towards the danger zone of the beach. 

Unable to clear backlogs, Karthik left the IIT Hyderabad campus on July 17, as per the police. He was found missing from his hostel room on July 17, following which, the IIT Hyderabad authorities lodged a missing complaint on July 19, 2023. Hailing from the Nalgonda district of Telangana, the tribal student had two backlogs in two papers in two subjects. Notably, the alleged suicide of Dhanavath Karthik adds up to the list of suicides by IIT students this year.

In a similar incident, Ayush Ashna, a 20-year-old IIT Delhi student was found hanging inside his hostel room on July 9, earlier this month. The police said that they did not find any suicide note inside Ayush' hostel room and they suspected no foul play either. The police were further reported as saying that Ayush' hostel room was locked from the inside and was opened in front of his parents. Similar suicide cases of 18-year-old Vikram Solanki, a first year student at the IIT Bombay, and Kedar Suresh Chougule, a second year B.Tech Chemical Engineering student at the IIT Madras, have also drawn concerns over such deaths at IIT campuses.
