Delhi Schools To Remain Closed Till January 12 For Classes Nursery To 5 Due To Cold Weather: Atishi

The closure of Delhi Schools till January 12 is aimed at safeguarding school-going children from the intense cold wave sweeping several parts of North India.

Delhi Education Minister Atishi has said that all schools in Delhi will remain closed till January 12 for Class Nursery to 5 due to the prevailing cold weather conditions. The Delhi Minister announced the extension of the closure of Delhi Schools through her official handle on X.  Notably, the move comes in the wake of the cold wave sweeping across North India, and the closure of schools is aimed at safeguarding small schooling children from the severe cold wave. 

Speaking on ther reopening of Delhi Schools following the winter break, Atishi further said that schools shall remain open for classes 6th and upwards, but schools have been given clear inetructions to not operate before 08:00 am, and after 05:00 pm, news agency ANI reported. 

Earlier yesterday, the Directorate of Education (DoE) issued a statement announcing the extension of winter vacation in all Delhi Schools January 10, 2024. “Delhi is experiencing extreme cold waves and Indian Meteorological Department has issued yellow alert due to dense fog, light rainfall and drop in temperature for next few days, therefore, in light of the above and in continuation to earlier circular No.DE.23(3)/Sch.Br./2023/991. dated 06.12.2023, all the Govt., Govt. Aided and Unaided Recognised Private Schools of Delhi will remain closed till 10.01.2024 (Wednesday),” read the official statement. 

However, within hours of releasing the statement, the Directorate of Education Delhi, withdrew the notice stating that order was incorrectly issued. "The order extending winter break was incorrectly issued. The order has been withdrawn immediately. Decision on the same will be taken tomorrow morning," news agency PTI quoted an official as saying in the matter. 

Besides Delhi, the respective district administrations in the National Capital Region have also been monitoring the prevailing cold weather conditions, and taking appropriate steps to protect small children from the intense cold wave and fog. Earlier on Saturday, the Gautam Buddh Nagar District Basic Education Officer Rahul Panwar issued an order announcing holidays for students up to Class 8 in all schools in Noida and Greater Noida until January 14, news agency PTI reported.
