Nadda considered this move as a significant step towards creating a more holistic and inclusive education system. "The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, as envisaged by Hon. PM Shri Narendra Modi, has emphasized the importance of education in the mother tongue. The CBSE has recently issued a circular asking affiliated schools nationwide, to consider using Indian languages as the medium of instruction till the secondary level. It is scientifically proven that cognitive learning in the initial years, is the fastest in the native language. This is a major step towards making education more holistic and inclusive. I am grateful to the Hon. Prime Minister and congratulate Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Ji for implementing this important reform," Nadda said in a tweet.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) asked the schools to adopt Indian languages as optional mediums of instruction for multilingual education. The Ministry of Education and NCERT support the move under the National Education Policy, 2020. 

"In view of the initiatives taken to facilitate education through Indian languages, the CBSE affiliated schools may consider using Indian languages, as enumerated in the Schedule 8 of the Indian Constitution, as the medium of instruction from foundational stage till end of secondary stage (from pre-primary classes till class 12) as an optional medium in addition to other existing options," CBSE Director (Academic) Joseph Emmanuel said in a letter to schools.

"Schools may explore the available resources, consult with experts in the field, and collaborate with other schools to share best practices to make multilingual education in CBSE schools a reality," he added.

CBSE acknowledges the challenges in implementing multilingual education, including the need for skilled teachers, high-quality textbooks, and time constraints in two-shift government schools.

NCERT is taking the task of providing textbooks in 22 scheduled languages seriously, ensuring accessibility for all students in the upcoming sessions.

Higher education authorities are also adopting multiple languages, conducting exams, and offering technical, medical, vocational, skill, and law education in Indian languages.

CBSE emphasizes the crucial role of schools as the foundation of multilingual education, promoting continuity from school to higher education.

The Ministry of Education's direction to NCERT for preparing new textbooks in 22 scheduled languages is a significant step towards realizing this goal. These textbooks will be available to all students in the near future.
