An assistant professor at the University of Allahabad has been booked for allegedly making offensive remarks against hindu deities; Lord Rama and Lord Krishna. The faculty was charged after a joint complaint against the professor by the Vishva Hindu Parishad, Hindu Jagran Manch, and Bajrang Dal. In the complaint filed at the Colonelganj police station of the city, the right wing outfits have alleged that the professor Vikram Harijan, a faculty member at the department of medieval and modern history, made offensive remarks at the deities in a post on X (formerly Twitter). As per the police, the FIR was lodged at the complaint of Shubham, a district convener of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
Following the complaint, the professor was booked under sections 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion), 295-A (deliberate and malicious act, intended to outrage religious feelings) of the IPC, and Section 66 of the IT Act. In his post shared on X, the professor suggested jailing Lord Rama under sections 302 of the IPC, and alleged that Lord Krishna is guilty of sexual harassment.
The police complaint stated that the remarks by the professor have hurt the sentiments of hindu community and have outraged several students. "I have written this within the ambit of the Constitution. Lord Ram killed Shambhuk because Shambhuk belonged to the Shudra caste and was teaching the youths,” professor Vikram Harijan was quoted as saying by news agency PTI, on being asked about the matter.
He further said that Lord Krishna used to run away with women's clothes. "If this happened in today's time, would any woman have tolerated it,?” the professor was further reported as saying. The Indian Constitution grants freedom of speech, but individuals like Vikram Harijan are exploiting it to spread social unrest. They seem unaware that the Constitution does not permit making comments that may endanger the country's security and public order,” Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s Shubham was reported as saying.
