New Delhi: Nine people were injured after an elevator at a hotel in Noida Sector 49 malfunctioned and had a free fall from the third floor to the ground floor, police officials said on Friday. According to police, six of them sustained minor injuries while three suffered bone fractures.

"The incident was reported from Regenta Hotel and nine people suffered injuries in it. Six people had minor injuries while three have got their bones fractured. Prima facie, it appears the incident took place because of overloading,” news agency PTI quoted Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Noida) Shakti Avasthy as saying.

The hotel is located near Baraula in Sector 49 of Noida. Those suffering serious injuries were rushed to the hospital, police said, adding further investigation on the matter is underway.

In a similar incident at a Greater Noida society earlier on Thursday, an elevator at Golf Gardenia in Alpha 2 sector had a free fall from the ground floor to the basement with eight members of a family inside.

The family members, that included a two-year-old child and two senior citizens, were not injured, but they remained stuck inside the elevator for nearly two hours, officials said.

Two days back on Wednesday, a liftman at a commercial building in Kolkata’s Park Street area was killed after an under-service elevator accidentally fell on him, PTI reported.

"It seems that Rashid Khan, the liftman, had sneaked through the lift doors on the ground floor to see how the maintenance works were being done. It was at that time the lift fell on him from the top after the cable snapped," a police official said. At the time of the mishap, the lift was on the third floor, he added. Police will initiate an investigation into the mishap, they said.
