Delhi will have four dry days from now till September. The first one will be observed on Saturday, July 29, on the occasion of Muharram. This will be followed by dry days on Independence Day (August 15), Janmashtami (September 7), and Eid-e-Milad (28 September). The Delhi Government declared the four dry days for the period of July to September 2023 after CM Arvind Kejriwal approved a proposal from the excise department on Wednesday. The Delhi Government issues a list of dry days every three months, which usually covers the same occasions.

What Is A Dry Day?

A dry day is observed on different occasions in India for various reasons, such as to prevent unscrupulous influencing during elections, hurting religious sentiments, and to show respect to national icons, etc. The practice of observing dry days is believed to have begun to show respect for Mahatma Gandhi's belief in abstinence from alcohol and drugs.

The sale of alcohol is banned on dry days. However, the consumption of liquor is not illegal on such days.
