Three helmet-clad men allegedly robbed a jewellery shop at gunpoint in northeast Delhi on Tuesday, however, a store staff managed to capture one while they tried to flee. The incident took place on Tuesday evening in Jai Durga Jewellers at Prem Vihar in Karawal Nagar. The shop owner Yash Baghel told the police that at around 4:30 PM, he and his father were present at the shop along with some customers when the three helmet-clad men barged in.
The men took away the jewellery kept on the shop's counter at gunpoint. As they tried to run away, the staff managed to overpower one of them, snatched his pistol and pinned him to the ground.
According to the police, on Tuesday, a call was received at around 4.39 p.m. regarding a robbery at a jewellery shop in Prem Vihar, Karawal Nagar.
The other two accused managed to come out of the shop but could not take their motorcycles while fleeing. They robbed another motorcycle from a rider at gunpoint and fled the spot.
Simultaneously, another PCR call reporting the robbery of a motorcycle was also received at the Karawal Nagar police station.
"In the commotion, the other two robbers escaped, leaving two motorcycles they had brought with them at the scene. While escaping, they also robbed another motorcycle from a rider on the road at gunpoint," said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Joy Tirkey told IANS.
The accused, who was caught by the shop's staff has been identified as Faizan, 26, a resident of Nand Nagari. Faizan was facing three criminal cases and had recently come out of jail on bail. A pistol with four live cartridges has been seized from his possession. Police have also seized the two motorcycles left behind by the robbers.
Faizan is being interrogated and teams have been formed to nab his two associates, police said.
An FIR under the relevant sections is being registered at the Karawal Nagar police station.
