A 50-year-old man died on Sunday after a BMW car allegedly hit his bicycle on the Mahipalpur flyover in southwest Delhi, Police officials said. The man was riding the bicycle on the Delhi-Gurugram expressway when the car smashed him.


Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Manoj C stated that the driver of the car has been arrested. The BMW driver rushed the victim to the hospital but doctors declared him dead.


A preliminary inquiry revealed that a tyre of the luxury car burst following which the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit the cyclist on the flyover. Police identified the deceased as Shubendu Chatterjee, a resident of Sector-49, Gurgaon (Haryana).

Earlier, information was received regarding the accident in the Vasant Kunj area. Police reached the spot on the Mahipalpur flyover towards Dhaula Kuan where they found the car and the damaged sports bicycle along the road. When police reached at the spot, they saw the bursted tyres of the BMW and the glasses of the windows were also damaged.


A case under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code was registered and the car was seized by the South Delhi Police.
