The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced on Friday that from November 1, only electric, CNG and BS VI-compliant diesel buses will be allowed to operate between Delhi and cities and towns in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan falling within the NCR region. This measure of the panel aims to combat air pollution which is caused by diesel-powered buses operating in the region, with the ultimate goal of transitioning them to electric vehicles, reported news agency PTI.
The Centre in April 2020 announced that in an effort to reduce pollution levels, all vehicles sold in India must comply with Bharat Stage-VI (BS-VI) emission standards.
Bharat Stage emission standards set legal limits on the amount of air pollutants, such as carbon monoxide and particulate matter, that vehicles in India can emit. These standards aim to improve emission control, fuel efficiency, and engine design.
Vehicle manufacturers provide vehicles that meet these new norms, and oil companies on the other hand supply fuel that adheres to BS-VI standards, known as the world's cleanest fuel.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government is working according to the winter action plan announced by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal last month amid people raising concerns over the rise in pollution in the national capital, said Environment Minister Gopal Rai. Speaking to news agency ANI, the Environment Minister said, “CM Arvind Kejriwal announced his 15-point winter action plan on seeing the report of rising pollution every winter. Delhi government is working based on that plan. For the hot spots, 13 special teams have been formed. These teams are focusing on the action plan made for the hot spots. As far as stubble burning is concerned, bio decomposers are being used to decompose the stubble.”
