A local Samajwadi Party (SP) leader in the Mau district of Uttar Pradesh has been accused of repeatedly raping an 18-year-old woman and threatening her with death, police reported on Sunday. According to news agency PTI, the SHO of Kotwali Nagar police station in Mau, Anil Kumar Singh, stated that the accused Virendra Pal, who is also a lawyer, raped the woman for almost a year. Pal is currently on the run, and efforts are underway to arrest him.

The victim, who assisted Pal with his legal work, claimed that he lured her into his car, drove to a secluded area, and gave her a cold drink laced with sedatives before raping her.
