An inmate at Delhi's Tihar Jail was stabbed in a fight on the premises between members of rival gangs, police said on Thursday. Hitesh, who is an undertrial in a murder case, was injured in the fight and rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment, they added, according to a PTI report.


A police officer was quoted as saying by PTI that the fight allegedly broke out around 11.15 am on Wednesday. The officer identified Hitesh as a member of the Gogi gang, and the other side in the fight as two members of the Tillu Tajpuriya gang. 


Quoting sources, the PTI report said Hitesh was stabbed with a weapon similar to an ice-pick. 


"On Wednesday, a matter was reported in Hari Nagar Police Station from DDU that an injured man from Tihar jail has been brought to the hospital. Based on that, the local police reached the hospital and inquired about the matter," Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Vichitra Veer was quoted as saying by PTI.

The officer identified the Tajpuriya gang members as Gaurav Lohra and Gurinder, adding that the identity of the attacker is a matter of investigation. 


Hitesh has been in prison since 2019. Gaurav and Gurinder are on trial in cases of murder and attempted murder. Based on the injuries, a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered, as per PTI.  


In May 2023, gangster Tajpuriya was stabbed to death by several members of a rival gang in the same jail. Tajpuriya was allegedly stabbed "92 times" by four members of the rival Gogi gang – Deepak alias Titar, Yogesh alias Tunda, Rajesh, and Riyaz Khan, news agency PTI reported citing police officials.
