New Delhi: A two-month-old infant was found dead inside a microwave oven in Chirag Dilli area of south Delhi on Monday. The mother of the baby has been arrested in the case, ANI quoted Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Benita Mary Jaiker as saying.

Police got the information around 5 pm from a hospital about the death of a two-month-old baby, said Jaiker. The infant was spotted inside the oven by a neighbour.

"A 2-month-old infant was found inside a microwave in Chirag Dilli. We have all circumstantial evidence pointing towards the 26-year-old mother. She has confessed. We have put in an arrest of the mother as well," ANI quoted the DCP as saying.

The DCP said a post-mortem has revealed that the baby was smothered prima facie and was kept inside the microwave to be hidden.

"Her post mortem has been done, the doctor is saying that the child was smothered prima facie. The cause of death can be ascertained only after we receive the reports. But the child had been dead and was kept in the microwave to be hidden," the DCP said.

A case of murder has been registered against unknown persons. The mother of the infant was arrested after she was interrogated at the police station.

At the time of the incident, the child's father was at a departmental store that he runs and is located near their house, PTI reported. The couple also has a four-year-old son.

A neighbour told reporters that there was commotion in the area after the mother of the child locked herself inside the house.

"We broke the glass and entered the room. We found the woman lying unconscious inside and the child missing," PTI quoted the neighbour as saying.

"We checked all over the area, but could not find the infant. Later, two-three more persons came and they checked a room where an oven was placed they found the child inside," the neighbour said.

Another neighbour said the child was found inside a microwave oven in a room in the terrace of the house.
