The police on Thursday arrested Tathya Patel, driver of the car which killed at least nine people and injured 10 others at ISKCON bridge on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway in Satellite area of Gujarat's Ahmedabad. A video circulating on social media showed the moments of the second accident that took place at around 1 am. The arrest came after a high-level meeting was called by the Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel earlier on Thursday. As per news agency PTI's report, the victims landed nearly 25 to 30 feet away.
"Late night, a very tragic incident happened in Ahmedabad in which 9 people lost their life. Today, CM Bhupendra Patel called a high-level meeting. In this meeting, the Gujarat Police, Road and Buildings Department, RTO and all the other departments were called," said Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi.
"Today morning the CM informed me and others that justice should be soon served to the families of people who have lost their life and that strict action will be taken in the matter so that no youth in the future would dare to commit such an act," he added.
Police said that a constable and a Home Guard jawan who reached the spot after the first accident of a collision involving two vehicles were among those killed in the incident. The car driver, Tathya Patel, was also admitted to a private hospital as he too received injuries, a police official informed.
"At around 1 am, a Thar (SUV) collided with a truck at ISKCON Bridge on SG Highway. After receiving information about the accident, local traffic police and a Home Guard jawan reached the spot to manage the traffic and handle the situation. Out of curiosity, several bystanders also gathered at the spot to check what had happened," Satellite police station inspector K Y Vyas said, as quoted by PTI.
