A 24-year-old man from Bareilly's Izzatnagar area allegedly died by suicide at his home reportedly due to a marital dispute, police said on Thursday, PTI reported.

On Wednesday, the deceased, who was identified as Raj Arya, hanged himself inside room.  According to family members, he allegedly took the drastic step as a result of hasrassment from his wife, Simran (23), with whom he had a love marriage in April 2024.

The police said that the couple had been working in private companies at the time of their marriage, but both had recently lost their jobs. "The couple had a daughter just 45 days ago", the officer said.

On Wednesday morning, Simran allegedly posted two Instagram status updates. In one, she claimed to have filed a police complaint against her husband, writing that "He will be in jail by 10:30 AM." In a follow-up post, she wrote, "Now go to jail." Later that evening, Arya took his own life.

According to family relatives who spoke to PTI, Raj and Simran had been at odds for a while. After a heated dispute about ten days earlier, Simran left for her parents' house.

Raj went to Shahjahanpur to pick up Simran from her mother's house two days prior to the suicide since they were going to a wedding in Dehradun.

Simran's family allegedly refused her from going to the event with him. According to Raj's sister, Simran's brothers attacked both him and their father during the altercation in her Saharanpur home.

After he returned to Bareilly, Simran's family registered a complaint alleging violence against Raj and his family at the women's police station. Raj was then summoned to the station to be questioned.

Simran's brother, a police officer stationed at the police station, and other individuals allegedly physically attacked Raj while he was imprisoned overnight, according to the family.

Speaking to the police, the deceased’s mother recalled her conversation with her son, when he told her, “Maa, I’m going to sleep forever." Unaware of his intentions, she grew concerned and eventually found him hanging from the ceiling fan.

According to news agency PTI, Circle Officer Ajay Kumar confirmed the incident and said further legal proceedings would be initiated upon receiving a formal complaint from the family.
