A man accused of robbery carrying a Rs 50,000 bounty was arrested on Wednesday evening following an encounter with police, officials said, news agency PTI reported.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Kumar Sharma said, "Dadri police have arrested Sonu alias Nizam Mehar alias Mehruddin. He has a bounty of Rs. 50,000 on him, and he is a resident of Baghpat. He has been arrested by the police during an encounter. There was information that he was going to come to this area, so the police trapped him. He fired at the police; he was shot in the leg during crossfire..."

As per the details, when Dadri police station was checking near the road leading to Basantpur Bangar, a person was seen coming on a motorcycle. However, when the police signaled him to stop, he attempted to flee.

The accused along with his eight companions had looted a truck loaded with iron sheets from the Eastern Peripheral Highway.

Sonu has been absconding for the past three years and seven cases were registered against him. Some of his associates were arrested earlier, Sharma said, as quoted by PTI. The police has recovered a country-made pistol, cartridges and a stolen motorcycle from him.

In December last year, Greater Noida police arrested a criminal with a reward of Rs 25,000. In the encounter, the criminal was injured after being shot in the leg. The criminal was identified as Suraj, a resident of Bulandshahr. The police was searching for him since October. The police recovered a stolen motorcycle, pistol, cartridges etc. from the accused.

Additional DCP of Greater Noida, Ashok Kumar, said that the Knowledge Park police was checking near the road leading to Jhatta crematorium. During that time, seeing a suspect coming on a motorcycle, the police signaled him to stop but he did not stop and started fleeing. When the police tried to chase him, he opened fire on the police. During this, the police also retaliated in which the criminal was injured after being shot in the leg.
