Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday announced that Bhadohi district will once again be renamed Sant Ravidas Nagar. The announcement was made during the launch of the BJP's 'Samrasta Sankalp Abhiyan' in Varanasi, with the Chief Minister saying the move marks the 650th birth anniversary of Sant Guru Ravidas.
Renaming Announced
Addressing the gathering, Adityanath said the district, which was earlier known as Sant Ravidas Nagar, would regain its previous name.
"On the occasion of Sant Ravidas' 650th birth anniversary, Bhadohi will once again be known as Sant Ravidas Nagar. We will complete this work," he said.
The Chief Minister said the decision reflected the government's commitment to honouring saints and social reformers. According to him, naming public institutions and places after such personalities promotes social unity.
Political Attack
During his address, Adityanath also took a swipe at the Opposition, saying those whose ideals were "Babur and Aurangzeb" would never support such decisions because they sought to divide society.
"Those who unite people name places after great personalities," he said.
The announcement came as the BJP launched its 'Samrasta Sankalp Abhiyan' in Varanasi, a campaign centred on social harmony.
Earlier Name Change
The district was previously known as Sant Ravidas Nagar before the Uttar Pradesh government renamed it Bhadohi on December 6, 2014.
The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by the then Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
With the latest announcement, the Yogi Adityanath government has signalled its intention to restore the district's earlier name as part of the commemorations marking the 650th birth anniversary of Sant Guru Ravidas.
