In a shocking case, a foetus was found abandoned near a drain in Gujarat's Surat, among dust, balloons, and an empty packet of cigarettes. As carrion birds hovered over it, a group of children nearby dispersed them by throwing stones at them. However, they were shocked to find a body at the spot, following which police was called in.

The foetus, which was a girl's, was then rushed to the civil hospital but was declared dead by doctors. The incident took place in Surat's Apekshanagar on January 9, a report by NDTV said.

The police launched an investigation and their search led them to the doorstep of a 16-year-old girl. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone 4 Vijay Singh Gurjar, the girl's mother and another person, who reportedly aborted the foetus denied it, but when the police persisted and took the girl for a medica examination, it was confirmed by a New Civil Hospital doctor that she had been pregnant.

Further investigation revealed that the girl even attended school till January 3. The girl, during inquiry, revealed that she had met a 17-year-old boy on Instagram and had become friends with him. The police officer said that the boy lived in a rented house in Pandesara, an industrial area in Surat, NDTV reported.

"They had physical relations due to which the girl became pregnant," the police officer said.

When the boy learned that the girl is pregnant, he fled to his home in Uttar Pradesh from where he went to Mumbai, said the police.

"From Mumbai, the boy sent her a packet of tablets to end the pregnancy. She took two tablets and had a miscarriage at home. She threw the foetus away," the police officer added, quoting the girl.

The boy and the girl's DNA samples have been taken and an investigation is underway. The boy has been detained by the police and will be soon produced before a Juvenile Justice Board.
