Punjab: Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal had a close shave on Wednesday morning. He survived an assassination bid as former terrorist Narain Singh Chaura tried to shoot the former Punjab Deputy CM, who was serving the 'tankhaiya' penance at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
Chaura was immediately overpowered by the people in the area and was arrested by security personnel.
The bullets were fired at the Golden Temple in Amritsar where SAD leaders, including Sukhbir Singh Badal and Bikram Singh Majithia, are offering 'seva' as 'religious punishment' pronounced by Sri Akal Takht Sahib on December 2.
Holding a spear in one hand, Badal, in a blue 'sevadar' uniform, was at the entrance of the Golden Temple in his wheelchair, serving his punishment. He has a fractured leg.
Sukhbir Singh Badal is serving tankhaiya at the gates of the Golden Temple with a fractured leg. He sits on a wheelchair with a board strung around his neck. Badal is serving the religious penance due to the alleged "sins" committed during the SAD government in Punjab.
After the incident, Punjab ADCP Harpal Singh said: "There were proper security arrangements here... Sukhbirji was given proper security cover... Narayan Singh Chaura (assailant) was here yesterday as well... Today, he first paid obeisance to the Guru..."
