The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Delhi-NCR after several parts of the national capital were lashed by heavy rains early Friday morning.
Over 100 flights were delayed and three others diverted at the Indira Gandhi International Airport due to inclement weather conditions, according to data from flight tracking website Flightradar24.com. Waterlogging and uprooted trees were reported in several parts of the city, causing inconvenience to commuters.
An official said two flights that were scheduled to land at the Delhi airport were diverted to Jaipur and one to Ahmedabad, news agency PTI reported.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), which operates the airport in the city, stated in a post on X at 5:20 AM that some flights were affected owing to inclement weather conditions.
In another post at 7:25 AM, DIAL stated that the thunderstorm has passed, but there is some impact on flight operations due to adverse weather conditions in the capital. "All stakeholders are working together to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience," it said. Air India also said that flight operations in some parts of northern India were hit due to the weather. "Some of our flights to and from Delhi are being delayed or diverted, which is likely to impact our overall flight schedule. We are doing our best to minimise disruptions," the airline wrote in a post on X at 5:51 AM.
CM Rekha Gupta Assesses Situation
Delhi CM Rekha Gupta assesses situation at Majnu Ka Tilla as heavy rainfall lashed the national capital.
"There is a problem of waterlogging in many areas of Delhi. In some places, there are no drains; in others, the drains are clogged, and in some, the roads are damaged. Delhi is in a very bad state and needs urgent improvement," she said.
Calling it an "alarming situation," CM Rekha Gupta said that all departments and agencies must take today's rain as a "warning to begin addressing areas prone to waterlogging."
"We have directed our officers and departments to take immediate action wherever there is issue of waterlogging," she added.
