An elderly man was killed and two others injured when part of an abandoned school building collapsed in Ranchi’s Piska Mod area late Thursday night. The injured were taken to Sadar Hospital for treatment. As per the initial report, three people were inside the building when the incident occurred.

According to Ranchi police, the incident occurred when three people had taken shelter inside the deserted government school during the night. A section of the building’s roof caved in amid ongoing heavy rainfall across the region.

Sukhdeonagar Police Station in-charge Manoj Kumar confirmed that the deceased was an elderly man who had been sleeping in the school’s corridor. "We received information that another person might be trapped under the debris. A rescue operation is currently underway," he said.

The collapse follows days of continuous rainfall in Jharkhand, which has triggered flood-like conditions in several districts. Rivers are in spate, reservoirs are full, and the pressure on barrages has increased sharply. Authorities have closed all schools in three districts as a precaution. In the Bheem Barrage, 38 out of 40 gates have been opened to release excess water.

Police are investigating the incident and awaiting further details.
