A video of railway staff throwing water on sleeping passengers at a railway station in Lucknow has sparked online criticism.

The incident is said to be from Charbagh railway station in Lucknow where sanitation workers can be seen sprinkling water on the railway platform in a bid to clear the platform for cleaning.

The incident comes even as North India is under the grip of severe coldwave with temperatures in Lucknow dipping as low as 10 degrees Celsius.

The viral video shows sanitation workers using mugs to throw water on the platform as part of a cleaning routine. However, the water also drenched sleeping passengers, including women and children, forcing them to vacate the area.

The incident has sparked outrage online, with many condemning the workers' actions. The video was shared by a social media user and is said to have taken place on December 25. The passengers in the video were waiting for their trains on platforms 8 and 9. After the staff splashed the water on the platform, the passengers had to vacate the area carrying their blankets.

It could be seen in the video that the passengers had covered themselves in blankets due to the cold. However, the cleaning staff, who arrived to wash the platform, started pouring water on the platform.

Responding to the incident, a social media user wrote, "Very despicable behavior by railway staff! People resting at the Charbagh railway platform in Lucknow were dispersed by spraying water in this chilling cold. Inhumane and condemnable!!"

Meanwhile, the Northern Railway's Lucknow Division responded confirming the incident and saying that the Chief Health Inspectors (CHIs) and sanitation staff involved have been counselled.

"Necessary instructions have been given to the CHI and sweepers posted at the station. Passengers are also advised to avoid sleeping on the platform. Adequate facilities like waiting hall, dormitories and retiring rooms are available at the station, which they can use for their convenience and comfort," the Northern Railway’s Lucknow Division said in a post on X.
