Twelve more people were arrested in connection with the violent protests over the Waqf Act in Murshidabad, taking the total number of arrests so far to 150.
Murshidabad DGP Rajeev Kumar on Sunday said that the situation is fully under control.
Three people have been killed and many injured in the Murshidabad district following violent clashes after protests over the Waqf Amendment Act.
Here are all the updates in the Murshidabad violence case:
- The situation in Suti, Dhulian, Samserganj and Jangipur areas of the district is peaceful. Raids continued overnight, and 12 more people were arrested. More arrests are likely to be made in the violence case.
- Around eight companies of Border Security Force (BSF), along with around 1,000 police personnel, have been deployed.
- The Calcutta High Court had on Saturday ordered the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in Murshidabad district. The court said this direction will not be limited to Murshidabad district only and as and when required it should be extended to other districts faced with similar situation.
- Prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) have been imposed in the violence-hit areas, and the internet has been suspended, an official said.
- The security forces are checking vehicles on the main roads, and patrolling the sensitive pockets. An investigation is underway into the incidents of violence.
- Several vehicles, including police vans, were set on fire, stones were hurled at security forces, and roads were blocked as violence rocked various parts of the state, particularly Murshidabad, during protests over the new legislation on Friday.
- At least 18 policemen were injured in the violence on Friday. DGP Rajeev Kumar, who reached Samserganj on Saturday night, held a meeting with senior officers and took stock of the situation.
- Congress MP Isha Khan Choudhury urged the TMC government to organise an all-party meeting to restore peace in the violence-hit district. Choudhury is the MP of Maldaha Dakshin constituency, a part of which is Murshidabad district's Samserganj assembly segment.
- Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari claimed that over 400 Hindus were forced to flee Dhulian in Murshidabad and take shelter at a school in Malda district's Baisnabnagar following the violence.
- The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on April 3, and by the Rajya Sabha in the early hours of April 4 after marathon debates in both Houses of Parliament.The Act aims to streamline the management of Waqf properties with provisions to safeguard heritage sites and promote social welfare. It also seeks to improve governance by enhancing transparency in property management, streamlining coordination between Waqf boards and local authorities and protecting stakeholders' rights.
