Mumbai was lashed by another spell of heavy rainfall on Monday. Amid the downpour over the past 12 hours, some areas received up to 34 mm of rainfall in just one hour. According to a PTI report, in the 24 hours upto 8 am on Monday, Mumbai recorded an average of 135 mm of rainfall, officials said.
The heavy rainfall has led to waterlogging in several places in the city and suburbs.
Citing an India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, PTI reported that, over the next 24 hours, the city and suburbs can expect “heavy to very heavy rain”, with “extremely heavy rainfall” likely in certain isolated places. According to PTI, the Konkan and Vidarbha regions in Maharashtra have been receiving heavy rainfall since the weekend, which has caused rivers to swell and low-lying areas to submerge.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in Mumbai and other parts of the state. "We have deployed NDRF teams at Vasai (Palghar district), Thane, Ghatkopar and Powai (in Mumbai), Mahad (Raigad), Khed and Chiplun (Ratnagiri), Kudal (Sindhudurg), Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara due to the monsoon season as pre-positioning, apart from three teams in Mumbai and one team in Nagpur as regular deployment," an NDRF official told PTI.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also said a high tide of 4.59 metres is expected at 12.59 pm. The Mumbai Police informed residents to avoid coastal areas due to heavy rainfall.
On Sunday, heavy showers in Mumbai and the suburbs inundated the roads in many areas, led to flight diversions, and briefly affected local train traffic between the Dadar and Matunga stations.
The Mithi River swelled due to the continuous rainfall, and was flowing at 1.5 metres on Monday morning. On Sunday, it had reportedly reached the flood level of 2.26 metres.
