Mumbai Police are investigating a stabbing involving actor Saif Ali Khan and have questioned a woman in West Bengal for allegedly supplying a SIM card to Sariful Islam, a Bangladeshi national who entered India illegally and has been arrested for the attack.

Police sources indicated that the woman, Khukumoni Sheikh from Chapra in Nadia district, was reportedly acquainted with Islam. "The SIM card the accused was using during his stay in India was traced to the woman. The woman is being questioned. She has, however, claimed that her phone was stolen earlier," a source said, NDTV reported.

"The Mumbai Police team that went to West Bengal recorded the statement of that woman. In the investigation till now, the police have no doubt about the role of the woman in the Saif's case, but if she helped the accused in providing the SIM card in the wrong way, then the police investigation can move forward on this line. Till now the woman was called only for questioning, neither has Mumbai Police detained her nor arrested her," ANI cited Mumbai police report.

Previously police stated that Islam entered India illegally through Meghalaya seven months ago. After spending a few weeks in West Bengal, he moved to Mumbai in search of work.

During questioning, police disclosed that the 30-year-old crossed the Dawki river along the India-Bangladesh border and assumed the name Bijoy Das upon arriving in India. In Bengal, he reportedly used a local resident's Aadhaar card to obtain a SIM card before relocating to Mumbai.

"After reaching Mumbai, the accused chose to work in places where he was not required to furnish any documents. He studied till Class 12 in Bangladesh and had come to India in search of a job," an officer stated.

Police revealed that they have obtained two identity cards confirming Sariful Islam hailing from Bangladesh. One is a National Identity Card stating his date of birth as March 3, 1994, and naming his father as Mohammed Ruhul Islam. The other is a learner’s driving license indicating he was a resident of Barisal, a city in south-central Bangladesh.
