A woman professor of a government college was found dead at her home in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur city on Friday. Police have launched an investigation into the matter to ascertain if she was murdered or died by suicide.

Pragya Agrawal, 55, was a professor at the Government Home Science College in the city. She was found lying in a pool of blood at her residence in the Amber Vihar locality under the Garha police station area, news agency PTI reported citing an official.

It was only when a domestic help arrived at the professor's house at around 10:00 AM in the morning that she found Agrawal dead in her house. She then alerted neighbours about the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police Suryakant Sharma told reporters. He also said the deceased was unmarried and lived alone.

The official said that there was a deep slit on the woman's right wrist, and a small cut on her neck as well. The police have registered a case of unnatural death and started  an investigation into the matter.

He further said forensic evidence had been collected from the spot, and the deceased's acquaintances were being questioned.

City Superintendent of Police (Garha) Ashish Jain stated that while the preliminary findings suggest suicide, investigators are awaiting the autopsy report to find out the exact cause of death.
