Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Abdul Rehman from Seelampur constituency has resigned from the party’s primary membership and joined the Congress party on Tuesday ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. He joined the party in the presence of Congress state president Hassan Ahmed and former Mustafabad MLA, according to IANS.
While announcing his decision he alleged the Arvind Kejriwal-led party for ignoring the rights of Muslims. "Today I am resigning from the primary membership of the Aam Aadmi Party. The party ignored the rights of Muslims by getting entangled in the politics of power, Arvind Kejriwal always did his politics by running away from the issues of the people. I will keep fighting for justice and rights." Delhi MLA Abdul Rehman said in a post on X.
Rehman said in the letter issued while resigning, " At the time of the party's inception, I believed it to be a party that would rise above religion, caste, and community to serve the people. However, in recent years, the Aam Aadmi Party has repeatedly proven that it engages solely in vote-bank politics, and when it comes to protecting the rights of any community, the party remains silent."
"During the Delhi riots, your government's attitude was deeply disappointing. No concrete steps were taken to ensure justice for the victims, nor was any empathy shown. Our colleague Tahir Hussain, who was falsely accused during the riots, was not only expelled from the party but was also abandoned to fend for himself," he accused.
"Amidst the pandemic, the Delhi Markaz and Maulana Saad were targeted. The party neither took a stand on the matter nor countered the misleading propaganda against Muslims. Recently, on a sensitive issue like the Sambhal riots, you did not even consider it necessary to issue a single tweet, he added"
Further, he said that the party once claimed that it would engage in honest and transparent politics, but today, it has become entangled in the politics of power like any other party.
"Your silence and indifference on issues concerning Muslims have repeatedly left me and my community feeling betrayed. The party's leadership is now prioritising its political ambitions over the welfare of the people," he further added.
He finally announced that he continue working for the people of Seelampur and will fight for their rights and justice. Rehman said that he will soon announce his political direction and future course of action. And, reiterated that his goal will always be to serve the people and protect their rights.
