In a shocking incident, a man attempted to die by suicide by setting himself on fire near the new Parliament building in Delhi on Wednesday afternoon.
The man, idenified as Jitendra from Uttar Pradesh, has been undergoing treatment at the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital in the national capital. He has reportedly sustained 90 per cent burns after he set himself afire.
According to the Delhi Fire Services officials, the incident occurred at around 3.35 PM near the Railway Bhawan roundabout opposite the Parliament building. The police constables present at the spot extinguished the fire immediately and rushed him to the hospital.
As per the Delhi Police, Jitendra is from Baghpat, UP, and is said to have attempted suicide due to mental stress. He was upset due to some family disputes and legal matters. Sources told ABP News that his family had a conflict with another family as a result of which members of both the sides had gone to jail.
Jitendra is said to have had arrived to Delhi on Wednesday morning via train from Baghpat. He had even brought petrol with hemself. As of now, his condition remains criticial as he is undergoing treatment at the hospital's ICU.
A police officer told news agency PTI that he was carrying a bag containing a notebook and some clothes. "He sat on the footpath for a few minutes before pouring some chemicals over himself and setting himself on fire," the officer said.
After his body was engulfed in the flames, Jitendra ran on the road before falling down. The security personnel who saw this rushed and put a blanket on him to douse the fire. Police said his half-burnt backpack and some other belongings were also recovered from the spot. A general ticket of Rs 15 was also recovered from his pocket, PTI reported.
The officer stated that the man's family members have been contacted regarding the matter and further investigations were underway.
