A sarpanch's car came under attack in Maharashtra's Dharashiv as four people allegedly shattered the windshield of his SUV and hurled a condom filled with petrol inside the vehicle, said the police on Friday.
The incident took place at around 10 pm on Thursday night at Tuljapur, an official said, adding the sarpanch, Namdeo Nikam and another occupant of the car suffered injuries in the attack, reported PTI.
The sarpanch of the Mesai Jawalga was going towards the village from Barul in his SUV when four people on two motorcycles came close to his car, said an official. They threw eggs on the front glass of Nikam’s vehicle, the official added.
The miscreants broke the car's windshield with a cement block improvised to act like a hammer. They also threw a petrol-filled condom inside the SUV and splashed the flammable fuel on it, the official said.
Based on the sarpanch's complaint, a case has been registered by the Tuljapur police under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) section 110, concerning an attempt to commit culpable homicide, against four unidentified attackers, the official said.
Nikam lives in Pune and visits the village two to three times a week, the sarpanch told the police. He also claimed that he has no enmity with anyone in the village, the official said, adding that a police probe is underway into the incident.
The incident comes amid outrage over the murder of another village chief Massajog village, Santosh Deshmukh. He was abducted and murdered on December 9.
The probe of the two cases related to the murder has been taken over by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Maharashtra Police. The CID has formed a special investigation team headed by a deputy inspector general-rank officer to probe these cases.
Three persons -- Jairam Chate, Mahesh Kedar and Pratik Ghule -- have been arrested by the CID in connection with the case and their remand has been extended till January 6.
