The Resident Doctors' Association of VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital have called off their nationwide strike, following the Supreme Court's appeal.


"Supreme Court today i.e. 22.8.2024 (Thursday) at 10.30 am, it was brought to the attention that justice will happen in a fast-track manner and also every step will be taken towards the prevention of violence against healthcare workers nationwide including at the Institute level. The Supreme Court has addressed the concern of the safety of healthcare workers, especially women doctors at a national level and has constituted a National Task Force. In view of the above developments in a positive direction, we held a GBM and have decided to suspend our strike till further notice," the RDA said in a press note.

'Ask Doctors To Resume Work First': Supreme Court On Coercive Actions By Hospitals On Striking Doctors

The Supreme Court on Thursday resumed hearing the RG Kar Medical hospital and medical college rape and murder case of an on duty lady doctor. CBI, which took over the investigation from the city police after a Calcutta High Court order on August 13, has subjected Roy to psychometric tests, which can be loosely termed a form of personality evaluation to identify a person’s cognitive functions.

RG Kar Death Case LIVE Updates: Calcutta HC Gives Nod For Plea On ED Probe Against Sandip Ghosh

The Calcutta High Court has given a nod for filing a plea for an ED probe against RG Kar ex-principal Sandip Ghosh for alleged financial irregularities, according to a report by Times of India. 


Earlier, counsel for petitioner Akhtar Ali moved the court of Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj, praying for an ED probe. Counsel Susmita Saha Dutta moved the division bench of CJ T S Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya.She challenged the state’s SIT, which she called an “eye wash” and urged for early hearing of the application.

A former deputy superintendent of RG Kar on Wednesday moved the Calcutta High Court, seeking an ED investigation against Ghosh, alleging financial irregularities by him during his tenure at the state-run facility. The court granted permission to Dr Akhtar Ali to file the petition which is likely to be heard later this week. Ali had earlier claimed that he had filed multiple complaints against Ghosh in 2023 to the state government before he was transferred. Meanwhile, Bengal government had on Monday formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe into the alleged financial irregularities.

The West Bengal unit of the BJP will stage a 'Swasthya Bhavan Gherao' programme on Thursday to protest against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the R.G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata earlier this month. Sources in the state BJP told news agency IANS that the party leadership is determined to make the protest on Thursday a success for which BJP leaders are holding meetings to make all the arrangements full-proof.


Bengal BJP President and Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar is supervising the arrangements on the the ground level. “We are using all the possible resources to strengthen the movement on this issue,” Majumdar said on Wednesday.
