Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s remarks about Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) President K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) having a threat to his life from his own family have triggered a sharp response from the opposition party, leading to a walkout from the Assembly on Saturday.
Speaking in the Assembly, Revanth Reddy said, “K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) has separate security and all. I don’t want to speak about it. He has a threat to his life from his family members, so he keeps security. That is why he is staying away from them (family) amid police security. That is his problem; I don’t want to talk about it”, news agency ANI reported.
Following these remarks, BRS MLC K Kavitha demanded an apology from the Chief Minister.
“We have demanded the Chief Minister to apologise to our leader, KCR, whom he berated yesterday. He used very unparliamentary and undignified words against KCR. So we demanded his apology to us, and then give his reply to the Governor’s speech. But unfortunately, this government has not yielded to that, so we’ve walked out as a protest. In the Assembly, the BRS party walked out as a protest. And this is really very unbecoming of a Chief Ministerial position, and the person in that position should not speak like this. So we demand that he apologise to KCR unconditionally,” she told ANI.
BRS MLA Dr Palla Rajeshwar Reddy also criticised the Chief Minister, stating, “(Revanth Reddy) spoke as he does as a politician outside the Assembly. Inside the Assembly, he needs to answer the issues raised by the members. They have not fulfilled the promises they made to the agriculture sector, women, the elderly, and poor communities... He accepted on the floor of the house that his government had borrowed loans worth Rs 1 lakh 58 thousand crores in the last 15 months... They have not created anything using these loans.”
'Restrain Your Children': Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Accuses KCR Of 'Psychologically Hurting His Opponents'
Revanth Reddy, in his speech, also criticised KCR for attending the Assembly only twice in the past 15 months and challenged him to a debate on the state’s loss in utilising Krishna river waters. “Since December 2023, when the Congress government assumed office, Rao has drawn a salary of over Rs 57 lakh as an MLA and opposition leader. The opposition leader, who takes a government salary, has left the people to their fate,” he said, as per news agency PTI.
Responding to the BRS' objections to his frequent visits to Delhi, Reddy defended his engagements with the Centre. “The Centre is a union of states, and the country’s Prime Minister is indeed like an elder brother to any Chief Minister,” he said. He further noted that his visits were aimed at addressing Telangana’s issues and thanked Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for agreeing to transfer defence lands in Hyderabad to the state government.
BRS leader K T Rama Rao had recently criticised Revanth Reddy over his earlier remarks referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “bade bhai” (elder brother).
The Chief Minister also revealed that he had submitted a letter to PM Modi, requesting that steps be taken to enable Hyderabad to host the 2036 Olympics.
On the recent arrest of two female online journalists for allegedly circulating a derogatory video against the Congress government and Revanth Reddy, the Chief Minister warned of stringent legal action against defamatory content. “Leaders of journalists’ unions should define a journalist and list (mainstream) journalists. The unions should determine the punishment for those on the list if they commit such offences. Anyone not on the list is not a journalist, and those who are not journalists will be treated as criminals if they engage in defamatory propaganda,” he asserted.
Taking a swipe at the BRS, Reddy said the party was upset about police action against individuals who had posted abusive videos recorded in their party office. “The language used in these social media posts and videos makes my blood boil, as they target family members,” he said. “I am asking the one who condemned the arrest whether they would tolerate such comments if they were made about their sister, mother, or wife,” he added.
Revanth Reddy further accused KCR’s family of attempting to gain political mileage by making psychological attacks on their opponents. “Chandrasekhar Rao should restrain his children,” he said. “It is unacceptable if Rao believes he can gain political advantage by psychologically hurting his opponents.”
The Telangana Assembly session saw heated exchanges, with the BRS continuing its protests against the Chief Minister’s remarks.
