In a heart-breaking incident, a final-year student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Hamirpur has allegedly committed suicide, news agency PTI reported.


According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Ayansh Sharma, who hailed from Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly. He was enrolled in a dual degree programme at the premier institute in Himachal Pradesh. Police said that Ayansh was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room on Sunday evening.


Fellow students informed the NIT authority and the matter was reported to the police. Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Bhagat Singh Thakur said the incident is being probed. The police added that the student's family has been informed.

Last month, a 24-year-old PhD scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur ended his life by hanging himself from the ceiling of his hostel room.


The deceased was identified as Ankit Yadav. He was a resident of Noida and was pursuing a PhD in Chemistry. The matter came into light in the evening when Ankit's friends called him, however, it went unanswered. This was then Ankit's friends informed the IIT-Kanpur authorities, who in turn alerted the police and rushed to the room.


A suicide note was also found in the room in which Ankit stated that he took the extreme step of his own will and blamed nobody for it. However, the exact reasons behind the suicide will only be revealed after a preliminary probe, Additional DCP Dwivedi said. He added that the body was sent for post-mortem and the family members also arrived at the institute.


Last year, September 2024, a female student of NIT Patna was found hanging inside her hostel room on the campus located in Bihta on the outskirts of the Bihar capital.


The body of the woman, who hailed from Andhra Pradesh, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her hostel room. A suicide note was also found at the spot.
