A Haryana man, accused of extortion, was paraded in a skirt by police in Rewari district on Thursday.
The incident surfaced after a video of police personnel purportedly parading the accused, with his head shaved and wearing a skirt, circulated on social media.
Police said that the accused, identified as Rohit, allegedly demanded Rs 10 lakh from a local businessman.
However, after arresting the accused, the Haryana Police team, instead of taking him to the police vehicle, made him walk.
His head was tonsured and he was made to wear a skirt and walk for over a kilometre. According to local reports, the man was being taken from the Crime Branch police station in Purani Tehsil to Moti Chowk in handcuffs. This is the second such incident in the district.
The police, while responding to the incident, said that due to the road being non-motorable and the heavy rush in the market as the reasons behind parading him.
The accused has previously faced several criminal cases and served 12 years in prison for a heinous crime and came out of jail recently. The Haryana police had earlier paraded a gang of thieves.
