Two women in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur who were fed up with their husbands for their drinking habits left them to marry each other in an interesting turn of events.
On January 23, the two women exchanged vows in a rare spectacle with the marriage becoming the talk of the town.
The two met on Instagram where they got to know each other, the couple said while speaking to reporters after their marriage. Facing similar circumstances drew the two women closer to each other, according to a PTI report.
Both of them had to endure domestic violence at the hands of their alcoholic spouses after marriage, after which they got fed up with their husbands and broke relations with them.
After separation from their husbands, both of them remained very active on social media. Both used Facebook and Instagram where they got acquainted with each other five years ago and started talking.
Sharing each other's pain, their friendship became so deep that they could not live without each other and decided to get married, as per the PTI report.
Kavita and Gunja alias Bablu got married on Thursday evening at the Shiva temple called Chhoti Kashi in Deoria. Gunja played the role of groom and applied vermilion to Kavita and both took seven rounds and tied the knot with each other. Both vowed to support each other throughout their lives.
“We were troubled by our husbands' drinking and misbehaviour, Gunja said, speaking to reporters.
"It forced us to choose a life of peace and love. We have decided to live as a couple in Gorakhpur and work for a living,” Gunja said.
Temple priest Uma Shankar Pandey said the women bought garlands and vermilion and performed rituals.
