The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) in Thane district in Maharashtra has reported its first COVID-19 death on Monday. A 47-year-old woman succumbed to the virus while undergoing treatment at a hospital. The fatality made the woman the fifth person in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to die due to COVID-19 in the past eight days.
The woman was undergoing treatment for typhoid for ten days, but was rushed to a private hospital on Friday morning after her health deteriorated significantly. She died the same evening before her COVID-19 test results came out.
Dr Deepa Shukla, the officer in charge of the KDMC's Medical Health Department, confirmed the death. She stated that four people infected with COVID-19 were detected within the municipal limits after a spike was reported in several parts of Maharashtra, including areas in adjoining Mumbai.

Out of these patients, one woman died, another is undergoing treatment in a private hospital, third patient with mild symptoms was discharged after treatment, and the fourth has been transferred to Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital in Kalwa for further care, Shukla said.
Despite the rise in active cases, the doctor has urged citizens not to panic and appealed that they adhere to health precautions.
The Medical Health Department has advised individuals with co-morbidities and senior citizens to avoid going into crowded and enclosed places and use mask in public. The department has also emphasised to maintain hand hygiene, avoid public spitting, and use handkerchiefs or similar items while sneezing or coughing. Avoiding contact with those suffering from respiratory disorders is also being emphasised.
"Citizens experiencing cold, cough, body ache, sore throat, or breathing difficulties are advised to consult a doctor immediately and undergo priority COVID-19 testing," it said.
The KDMC has prepared isolation rooms with ventilation facilities at Bai Rukminibai Hospital in Kalyan and Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivali. Both of them are also offering tongue tests for coronavirus, the department said.
Meanwhile, an official update by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) Public Relations Officer (PRO) informed that 36 COVID-19 patients have been detected so far, with one death in the city. "Nine patients are hospitalised in stable condition, and 20 are in home quarantine," it said.
