Chennai weather today: In response to heavy rains that began on Monday night, Chennai District Collector announced a rain holiday for schools in the city on Tuesday. Initially, authorities had indicated that schools would operate as usual; however, this decision was reversed within 30 minutes due to the intensity of the rainfall and the forecast for continued inclement weather. An alternative working day for the missed school day will be announced later.
Chennai Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade stated, “In light of the heavy rain forecast, a holiday has been declared for all schools in Chennai today.”
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several regions, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and others such as Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Puducherry, can expect further heavy rains at isolated locations. Parts of Tiruvallur city have already reported significant rainfall.
The IMD attributes the rain to a developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. As per their report on Wednesday, "The cyclonic circulation over the Southwest Bay of Bengal persists at around 5.8 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards. A low-pressure area is likely to form over the region within the next 24 hours, moving westward towards the Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coasts over the following two days."
Weather conditions are being closely monitored with authorities urging caution as the system may bring further rainfall across affected areas.
