A man was arrested in West Bengal's Birbhum district for molesting a female nurse at a government-run hospital. The patient was brought to the hospital due to high fever on a stretcher and the nurse was administering her saline drip when the incident took place.

The patient inappropriately touched her, said the nurse in her police complaint, reported India Today. The nurse also alleged that the patient not only touched her inappropriately but also used offensive language towards her.

The hospital authorities immediately called the police, who arrived and arrested the accused. A formal written complaint has also been lodged at Ilambazar police station and a probe into the matter is underway.

"A male patient was brought in during the night shift with a fever complaint. As advised by the doctors, I was preparing to administer saline to him when he misbehaved," the nurse recounted.

"He touched me and used foul language. We feel unsafe working here due to the lack of proper security. How could a patient act this way," she said.

Another doctor, Masidul Hasan who was also on duty at the health centre on the night when the incident took place provided further details.

The patient, named Abbas Uddin came to the hospital at around 8:30 pm with a fever. As soon as he arrived, he started misbehaving, Hasan said.

"After some clinical examinations, we advised that he be given injections and IV fluids. When the nurse went to administer the saline, the patient behaved violently and molested her by touching her inappropriately," he said.

"We requested the patient's family to cooperate, but the patient continued to misbehave," he added.

Hasan said that the incident has been reported to the police and the authorities and added that they will consider a cease work if no action is taken.

The incident comes amid the rape and murder case of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident sparked a nationwide outrage with medical professionals across the country calling strike for 11 days.

The victim was raped and murdered in the seminar hall of the state-run hospital on August 9.
