A man in Bihar died after he was thrashed by a mob on the suspicion of stealing a tractor in Muzaffarpur, police said on Sunday. 


The incident was reported from Yogiya village of Rajkhand North Panchayat in Muzaffarpur district where the mob kept beating the man throughout the cold night even as he begged for mercy, a report in NDTV said. 


The deceased has been identified as Shambhu Sahni and was rushed to a hospital by the police where the doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.

The victim was accompanied by three more men, who managed to escape while Sahni was caught. 


A photo has gone viral showing Sahni was tied with a rope to an auto and was seen lying listless on the ground barefoot. Meanwhile, people could be seen standing a few feet away from his recording with their smartphones. 


The villagers said that Sahni had come along with his friends to steal the tractor. While the owner of the tractor woke up on hearing the noise and chased the gang, following which Sahni was caught.


The deceased was tied to the auto and left in the open throughout the cold night. Meanwhile, the mob kept beating until the police arrived and took him in their custody.

"The young man was accused of tractor theft and the tractor owner, in connivance with anti-social elements, beat him up and murdered him," Abhijeet Alkesh, police station in-charge of the Aurai police station in Muzaffarpur said.


Two people have been arrested after Sahni's death, including tractor owner Ganga Sahni and his nephew Pukar Sahni. The duo have been named the main accused in the murder case, police said.
