A Bengaluru doctor has been booked by the cops for killing a dog by throwing it from the second-floor corridor of the building in which he lived, said the police officers aware of the matter on Friday.
The dog died of critical injuries in the incident which took place on April 20, they added, reported Hindustan Times.
The accused has been identified as Dr Sagar Ballal, a neurosurgeon and a resident of Brindavan Apartments at Lakkasandra in southeast Bengaluru.
According to the police, the canine used to live on the premises of the apartment complex and was taken care of by the residents, the report stated.
A case was registered by the Adugodi police against Balla on April 22, based on the complaint of a 22-year-old student, Ayush Banerjee. The case has been booked under Section 325 (killing an animal) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which carries a sentence of up to five years in prison.
The accsused was summoned for inquiry, Adugodi police inspector Ravi Kumar said, adding that Ballal denied the charges levelled against him.
“The doctor told us that he has differences with his neighbours over car parking, following which they have filed a false complaint against him. No CCTV footage is available. We investigating the matter,” he added.
Dog Thrown For Second Time
The residents alleged that the dog, known as Scooby, was subjected to similar harassment earlier also when he was thrown from an upper floor.
On February 5, the residents of the housing complex woke up to the dog's cries at 2:30 am, a resident said. The residents took the dog to a veterinary hospital in southern Bengaluru, where doctors said that his spine was broken, besides sustaining other injuries.
The dog was discharged on April 16, however, they did approach the polie due to lack of a witness.
“On April 20, we again heard another loud noise around 2.30 am and found that Scooby had fallen on a parked car. He suffered severe head injuries and did not survive,” the resident added.
The police said that the residents saw Ballal entering his apartment and locking the door at the moment.
As per news reports, this is not the first instance as Balla was previously involved in the death of a stray dog in Indore in 2022 while pursuing a postgraduation degree.
