Air India Aircraft Skids Off Runway During Touchdown
Air India flight AI-2744, an Airbus A320 (VT-TYA), landed at CSMIA at 9:27 am amid intense rainfall. However, as it touched down on runway 27, the aircraft slid about 16 to 17 metres off the main runway near the touchdown zone. Despite the slippery conditions, the pilot swiftly regained control and taxied the plane safely to the designated parking stand.
Confirming the incident, an Air India spokesperson said, "Flight AI-2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai on 21 July 2025, experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion after touchdown. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate, and all passengers and crew have since disembarked. The aircraft has been grounded for checks. The safety of passengers and crew remains our top priority."
The flight crew’s professionalism ensured a calm landing experience for all on board, despite the momentary deviation off course.
CSMIA Confirms Incident, Activates Emergency Response Protocols
Responding promptly, Mumbai airport authorities deployed emergency protocols to ensure that safety procedures were in place, even though the aircraft managed to dock without further incident.
In a statement, Mumbai Airport said, "An incoming aircraft from Kochi experienced a runway excursion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai at 09:27 hours on 21 July 2025. CSMIA’s emergency response teams were immediately activated to manage the incident."
Meanwhile, the airport continues to experience operational challenges due to heavy rainfall. In anticipation of more weather-related disruptions, Mumbai Airport issued a public advisory on its official handle:“In view of the heavy rain forecast in Mumbai, passengers are advised to check their flight status with their respective airlines and allow extra travel time to reach the airport.”
With the India Meteorological Department forecasting continued rain in the coming days, air travellers have been urged to stay updated on flight statuses and travel with caution.
